A person can wish to go to the most beautiful place on earth and spend some time there, or wish to travel around the world. But if you ever get a chance to live in a hostel, you must never miss it. This is truly a lifetime opportunity through which we can learn many things, and if we miss it, I believe we miss one amazing and enjoyable part of our life. There are many benefits of living in a hostel, and I've realized it myself. There may be some disadvantages of hostel life, but the advantages are numerous. I would like to highlight some of the major advantages of living in a hostel.
1. Grooming
When you start your life in a hostel, you don't realize that it will have an impact on your personality in many ways. But after some days, months, or years, you come to know that it has groomed your personality. It builds up your confidence level, and you are no longer hesitant while talking to others. You feel very active every time, no matter whom you are talking to.
2. Decision-making Skills
If you are in a hostel, you are away from your home, and ultimately the hostel becomes your second home. It is "a home away from home." And when it comes to choosing an option or making a decision, you have to do it all yourself because your family members and relatives aren't with you to help. Naturally, you learn decision-making skills. Day by day, you start taking responsibilities on your shoulders and reaching conclusions on your own. In the end, you enhance your decision-making skills, which help you in your later life.
3. Explore Different Cultures
When you live in a hostel, you meet people from diverse backgrounds, with different castes, languages, and cultures. When you talk to them, you immerse yourself in their culture and start learning their languages. I am from Sindh, and I had never interacted with Punjabis, Saraikis, Pathans, and Balochis before coming to the hostel. But now, after spending some years in a hostel, I have learned a few words of Punjabi because my roommate is Punjabi. Although he rarely speaks Punjabi, I understand the language pretty well now.
4. Roommate
A roommate is like family to you. They are not just your room partner but a family member. You spend a lot of time with your roommate and share everything with them. They also assist you in every part of your hostel life. You can have tons of fun if your roommate is awesome. If they are good at studies, they can prove to be a mentor or guide to you. If they are a party kind of person, they can help you chill when you are stressed. Eventually, you make awesome memories with your roommate that you could never forget.
5. Freedom
This is the biggest advantage of hostel life. You are totally free except for a few hostel rules and restrictions (which don't really count). You are free to do anything at any time—no one is going to question you or object to your choices. You can watch movies, play games, listen to music, sing songs, dance, throw parties, go shopping, sleep late, wake up late, skip classes, and do late-night outings whenever you want. But you should always keep in mind that this freedom shouldn't harm your personality or affect your studies.
6. Different Atmosphere - Fun
The atmosphere of a hostel is quite different from other places. You can see various people doing different things. Some are watching movies and playing games, some are cramming from books all day, some are sleeping all day and staying up at night, some are busy with the same old routine, and some don't know what they're up to or what they want to do. And it's kind of fun seeing different people doing different things in one place. Besides this, hostel fun is never-ending—especially the hostel talks between classmates and friends. They discuss each and every matter of their lives, whether personal or social. They also make fun of each other, which is worth enjoying. Like when someone does something silly, all friends stand together and tease that person endlessly. But it's a part of hostel life and isn't considered a bad thing at all.
I have discussed here some advantages of hostel life, but there are many more. To sum it all up, I can say that by living in a hostel, you make a lot of memories that you can cherish for the rest of your life. You make new friends who are like family to you. You learn a lot of things from this changed life, and when you go back home, you go with one heck of a great experience that helps you in your professional life.
"And in the end it's not the years in your life; it's the life in your years."
